Senior Environmental Planner

Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Serve as project manager for preparing CEQA and NEPA documents for a variety of project types
  • Manage multidisciplinary teams of staff and subconsultants
  • Prepare various sections of environmental documents and review/edit other sections prepared by technical specialists
  • Manage and coordinate complex PEAs, CEQA and NEPA documents
  • Provide advice and guidance on complex federal and California regulatory issues

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental planning or a related field.  Master’s degree preferred
  • At least eight years of progressively responsible and applicable experience in environmental planning and preparation of PEAs and/or CEQA/NEPA documents
  • At least four years business development experience in a support role
  • Working knowledge of NEPA, CEQA, CPUC’s transmission planning process and General Order 131-D, and California land use regulations
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced, dynamic environment

Associate Planner

UltraSystems Environmental – Irvine, CA

UltraSystems is actively seeking to fill an Associate Planner position.  Candidate should be familiar or have experience with CEQA/NEPA and have two to four years of experience in the environmental field.  This position is located in our Irvine, California office.  This position is a regular, full-time salaried position. Salary will be based on qualifications and experience.  Our firm is seeking an individual to support various environmental projects throughout Southern California.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Serve as the Associate Planner for a variety of CEQA/NEPA–related projects. Applicant will be skilled at managing lesser environmental documents (CE/FONSI, IS/EA) and assisting project managers and other technical specialists to complete technical reports and sections of environmental documents.
  • Demonstrate expertise in federal, state and local laws and regulations related to environmental planning in California.
  • With direction from project managers, and with limited administrative supervision, independently apply advanced methods to work assignments.
  • Commonly supervise interdisciplinary teams of professional staff on small to medium projects, and medium to large tasks.  Expected to provide guidance in areas of technical specialty to junior-level staff.
  • Responsible for supervising and evaluating the work of team members, including writing and editing publications, including technical reports and CEQA/NEPA environmental documents.
  • Frequent contact with internal or external clients, agency staff and public. Occasional travel, including field work and meetings or other activities outside standard work hours will be required.

Qualifications

Two to Four years of relevant experience is required.  The successful candidate will be an experienced planner with a broad knowledge of the principles, practices and procedures in the field of environmental planning. Typical work will include existing on-call contracts, transportation and institutional projects.

BS degree in the field of planning or environmental science is required.  Experience should include relevant education, previous environmental consulting work, and strong writing and analytical skills.

Cultural Resource Project Manager

UltraSystems Environmental – Irvine, CA

UltraSystems has an immediate opening for a Cultural Resource Project Manager to join our expanding Cultural Resource Department.  This is a regular, full-time position to work primarily in the Southern California area, but project assignments will also involve travel to other areas.  The successful candidate will be based in our Irvine office.  Starting wage depends on qualifications and experience.

We assist public-agency clients with natural resource management, infrastructure development and regulatory compliance.  Founded in 1994, we have more than 32 professional, technical and support staff serving clients throughout California.  Currently, we are seeking the right person to fill the role of Architectural Historian to support our Irvine, CA office.

Experience and Skills

This position requires a post-degree minimum of 7-10 years of experience in the cultural resources field for our Irvine office.  The ideal candidate will help manage and support cultural resources and planning projects in the Southern California region.  This is a full time position, up to 40 hours/per week, depending on workload.  Pay rate will be based on individual qualifications and experience.  The candidate must demonstrate previous success in developing and managing projects without supervision.

Education: M.A. or B.A. degree in archaeology, or closely related discipline required. Other requirements:

  • Five (5) years of experience in project management related to environmental consulting services
  • Working knowledge of federal and state laws and regulatory agencies governing cultural resource management (i.e., SHPO, NAVFAC, etc.)
  • Demonstrated experience in increasing levels of responsibility, including supervising, providing leadership, and mentoring for other professionals

  • Prior advanced experience with proposal writing

Position Duties

Projects involve prehistoric and historical archaeology, architectural history, paleontology and ethnology.  Experience with federal and state regulatory agencies, and experience in regulatory consultation in support of public and private clients is required.  The available position is for a mid- to senior-level professional.  The successful candidate will have both technical and project management responsibilities, and will be required to:

  • Manage projects and milestones within schedule and budget expectations
  • Author and review stand-alone cultural resource reports, assessments, and cultural resource portions of documents as related to Federal and State Agencies
  • Manage the financial performance of individual projects and effectively coordinate with clients and regulatory agencies
  • Manage client relationships and conduct business development with new and existing clients
  • Collaborate with clients, UltraSystems staff members, and resource and regulatory agencies to obtain permits and clearances for project completion
  • Supervise, mentor and instruct subcontractors, technical staff and field personnel
  • Peer review cultural resource reports from other consultants
  • Prepare reports related to Section 106, National Environmental Policy Act technical documents, proposals, white papers and other written deliverables and responses related to various permitting/planning, compliance projects and regulations as required
  • Perform QA/QC oversight of field data to support report-writing, proposals, environmental permit applications and tracking and CEQA/NEPA documentation
  • Develop recommendations for mitigation measures, monitoring, and permitting specific to cultural resource management
  • Maintain a collaborative work environment and positive morale among staff, subcontractors, and clients
  • Take initiative, resolve problems, and create improved procedures to assure tasks are completed in the most effective manner
  • Perform fieldwork (survey, testing, archaeological monitoring, and data recovery) and/or supervising field crews
  • Communicate effectively and work collaboratively across multiple disciplines
  • Provide data QA/QC, organization, and tracking of field data, and collecting GPS data using Trimble units
  • Foster friendly, positive, productive, and scholarly working relationship with team members while promoting a culture of teamwork, engagement, quality service, and customer satisfaction

Field Archaeologist

UltraSystems Environmental – Irvine, CA

UltraSystems Environmental is seeking qualified field archaeologists for various projects throughout California.  Candidates must have professional archaeological field experience and be familiar with the practical requirements of survey, evaluation and monitoring projects.  Familiarity with the applications of CEQA and NEPA are preferred.

UltraSystems Environmental is a highly qualified professional consulting firm comprised of cultural resources scientists, geologists, biologists, planners, soil and wetland scientists, GIS professionals, LEED-accredited professionals and visual specialists.  We provide a wide range of services in environmental impact assessment, urban planning and biological resources, focusing on California’s unique and challenging regulatory and policy environment.

Experience and Skills

A Bachelor’s degree in archaeology, anthropology, or a closely-related field, plus at least two years of professional experience identifying, documenting and evaluating cultural resources for significance.  A Master’s degree may be used in lieu of one year of field experience.

Cross training in paleontological studies is preferred.  Candidate must be able to work independently and make on-the-ground decisions during monitoring and other fieldwork.  Field experience within the Great Basin, Mojave and California deserts is also preferred.

Candidates must have their own transportation, a valid driver’s license, and must be able to pass a drug test.  Candidates must also be able to hike 10 to 12 miles per day in often difficult terrain and harsh weather conditions while carrying up to 25 pounds.  Availability to work extended field rotations (about ten days at a time) and travel is required.

Position Duties

The candidate will be responsible for assisting senior archaeologists during survey, testing, field monitoring and laboratory studies; preparing written information such as site forms and report sections; and working closely with other cultural resources staff, clients and Native American representatives.  Familiarity with California prehistoric and historical cultural resources and the cultural history of California are required.  Experience with GIS is preferred; the candidate should have experience with Trimble devices and/or Garmin GPS data collection.  Candidates should have strong organizational skills.

Position Duties

    3. Should have excellent plant identification skills and knowledge with appropriate California botanical references.

    Desired Qualifications include:

    1. Education and experience in plant taxonomy and surveys, habitat/ association mapping.
    2. Knowledge of vegetation communities that are native to California.
    3. Experience with sensitive/rare plant surveys and reporting.  Familiarity with CNPS and Department of Fish and Game survey and mitigation guidelines for rare plants.

GIS Analyst

Job Title:   GIS ANALYST

Job Duties:  UltraSystems Environmental, Inc. in Irvine, CA is seeking GIS Analysts to assist scientists, technologists, or related professionals in building, maintaining, modifying, or using geographic information systems (GIS) databases.

Job responsibilities and duties include:

·         Provide GIS support for projects.

·         Conduct survey, evaluation, and data recovery investigations.

·         Perform analysis for and preparation of cartographic products for technical reports and other environmental documents.

·         Assist with GIS templates, field tablets, GIS documentation, and other key field data information.

Minimum Requirements: 

Masters degree in Geography, Geographic Information Science, or any related field of study, plus at least six (6) months of experience in the job offered or in a related position(s).

Qualified candidates must also have demonstrable proficiency, knowledge, skill and experience (gained through employment and/or education) with:

1. GIS software including ArcGIS, QGIS and data collection tools

2. Data mining, validation, and analyzing data

3. GIS analyses and map generation

4. Create and customize GIS tools and automate GIS data processes

5. Image classification techniques using Remote Sensing
